8th Grade High School Transition Information

January 28, 2016

Dear 8th Grade Parents,

We are beginning the process of transitioning from middle school to high school. Students will be selecting their 9th grade courses, and at the same time, will create their Personal Graduation Plan (PGP) for their four years of high school. Beginning with the Class of 2018 and beyond, students must select an endorsement, an area of study/concentration, to be a part of the student’s graduation plan. To assist our students in learning more about themselves, students have had the opportunity to take career interest inventories and to learn about their strengths through our Naviance/Family Connections web-based program. Your child’s personalized results in Family Connection may help your student in determining his/her endorsement, or area of focus. Although your student will create his/her initial graduation plan this year, this plan is fluid and can be adjusted along the way in high school. Students will have an active part in their educational planning as they re-visit their Personal Graduation Plan each year. Please see a timeline of upcoming activities as your student prepares for high school:

December 14-18, 2015 – Student guidance in high school graduation requirements and a review of the five endorsements

February 15-19, 2016 – Student guidance regarding the Personal Graduation Plan and elective pathways

February 22, 2016High School Showcase and 8th Grade Parent Meeting

This will be an evening to learn about core classes, elective options, and extra-curricular activities available to your student during their high school years. An 8th grade parent meeting will be conducted, as well. Parents will have the opportunity to speak to high school teachers, coaches, and organization sponsors.

February 23-February 26, 2016 – Each student will complete his/her endorsement selection and complete his/her Personal Graduation Plan (PGP). The endorsement selection and plan must be signed by the student and parent/guardian.

February 29-March 4, 2016 – Students input their Personal Graduation Plans in Home Access Center (HAC). The 9th grade year of the graduation plan is the student’s 9th grade course selections.

Course verifications will be sent home in late spring for students to make any final changes prior to the end of the school year.

Thank you for your partnership in helping our students prepare for 9th grade and beyond. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have questions about this process.
